About Judo
In 1882, Dr. Jigoro Kano, founded Judo. The Japanese vernacular meaning of judo is the “Gentle Way”. Judo is a combat sport and also a martial art that emphasizes self defense, safety, fitness and self discipline through competitive grappling and mat techniques. The spirit of Judo is encapsulated in the following phrases:
Seiryokyuzenyo or “Maximum Efficient Use of Energy”. Instead of meeting force with force, Judo teaches to “go with the flow” and redirect energy. Through Judo we learn the value in getting the most out of our effort and not wasting any energy. Whether it is in training or daily life, this is the key to getting the most out of our effort.
Jitakyoei or “Mutual Welfare and Benefit”. In Judo we are not enemies, rather we are partners working together to get the most out of our training. In Judo we ensure everyone is benefitting from training and that everyone is safe and taken care of. At the end of the day we are all part of the same team.
